Precision Dispensing for Engraved Parts

American Stove Parts manufactures and stocks OEM and replacement parts for various types of gas cooking stoves.

One of their customers, Imperial Range, presented them with a challenge, adding color to their engraved name on the oven handle. “We then looked around for some way of filling in the engraved letters with a urethane-based epoxy that had a colorant mixed in,” said Everton Cope, Owner of American Stove Parts. Cope settled on a pneumatic system.

The problem with this system was that the amount dispensed varied too much as the syringe went from being full to nearly empty. As a result, we were getting partially filled and overfilled letters, which varied the color from dark blue to light blue. Neither condition was acceptable, so we looked to Fishman and their LDS9000 AirFree™ dispensing system.

With the LSD9000 we got the same preprogrammed amount of epoxy with each shot. After a dot of adhesive is dispensed, a programmable pullback of the piston prevents fluid ooze. “A big help to us,” remarked Cope, “was the fact that dispensing of the epoxy is unaffected by either temperature, changing viscosity, or the amount of material in the syringe. As a matter of fact, the gun can’t deliver anything but that amount, until the control unit is programmed for a different amount.”

According to Cope, “We initially dispensed the epoxy manually from the LDS9000, but ultimately decided to secure the dispenser in a benchtop mount designed for our purposes. We achieved the precision and repeatability we needed, eliminating possible causes of variations in the results.”
