Ophthalmic Fluid Dispensing Applications with the SmartDispenser®

The AirFree® technology of the SmartDispenser® is used across a variety of ocular/ophthalmic fluid dispensing applications to control the processes; from design to manufacturability. As the fluid compounds used to make products such as foldable intraocular lenses and one day use contact lenses become more advanced, manufacturers must design a fluid dispensing process that is controlled, electronically documented and consistent.

Increasingly, OEMs in the ocular arena use the SmartDispenser® to design a very controlled process that meets the FDA requirements for verification and validation. Here’s more information about ophthalmic fluid dispensing:

Process Control for Ophthalmic Fluid Dispensing

Ophthalmic/ocular fluid applications require the process control that is provided by the SmartDispenser®. Complex fluids and gels that change in viscosity over short periods of time are dispensed. Any presence of air can cause bubbles that destroy the functionality of the end product. Contact lens dispensing requires consistency and bubble/air free dosing. Manufacturers of optical products require high yields, it is the key to their success.

Using the SmartDispenser® for Ophthalmic Fluid

Using the SmartDispenser®, production managers can electronically receive daily production start and finish times. They are then able to review the cycle times of the last 28 days for upward or downward trends in production output and use the data to confirm investments in production equipment improvements; are they increasing production cycles as predicted by the break even, cash flow and ROI analysis predicted? The SmartDispenser® in contact lens manufacturing has been successful in all aspects of lens manufacturing from lens dosing to coatings and mold release treatments.

Ophthalmic fluid dispensing applications include:

  • Dispensing of fluids to manufacture intraocular lenses that are typically inserted during cataract surgery. These lenses are made of silicones, acrylics, monomers, and hydrogels.
    • Attachment of haptics on intraocular lenses.
    • Dispensing of saline and other fluid solutions for packet filling with contact lenses.
    • Dispensing of viscoelastic gel used in surgery. The viscoelastic material is used to stabilize the eye for the surgeon.

SmartDispenser® for Manufacturing Ophthalmic Instruments

The SmartDispenser® is also used in the manufacture of ophthalmic instruments. The assembly of precision optical scopes, illuminators and magnifiers require the controlled dispensing of 1 and 2 part epoxies, light cure adhesives and a wide variety of other fluid formulations. The bonds are critical to the performance of the end product.

Manufacturers of ocular/ophthalmic products require a fluid dispensing solution that is controlled and will meet the requirements that the FDA has set forth. Precision is everything and the AirFree® technology of the SmartDispenser® ensures that each dispense is accurate and repeatable, resulting in the highest quality ophthalmic end products.
